creata totalmente in grafica computerizzata, basandosi, per molte scene, sulle sale della Queen Mary 2.

Gli
effetti speciali digitali sono stati completati dall'Industrial Light & Magic e Moving Picture Company. ILM ha
utilizzato la versione più avanzata di mental ray per le foto realistiche della luce e girare le riprese, ed è
stata responsabile di tutte le riprese esterne della nave. Il lavoro più complicato è stato per la scena iniziale
della nave, che vanta uno dei modelli digitali più complessi mai realizzati alla ILM. Per le simulazioni di acqua
è stato utilizzato il software PhysBAM, creato in collaborazione con la Stanford University. Ma anche la Hydraulx
capitanata da Greg Strause, Colin Strause e Bill Kunin si sono occupati degli effetti speciali digitali.

L'MS Poseidon, una lussuosa nave da crociera, sta attraversando l'Atlantico
diretta a New York. La notte di capodanno, accade l'imprevedibile, mentre nella sala da ballo della nave, il capitano
Michael Bradford, intrattiene i passeggeri con gli auguri per il nuovo anno. Durante i festeggiamenti, gli ufficiali
addetti al comando avvistano un'onda anomala, di 45 metri d'altezza, diretta verso di loro. La nave nonostante le virate
di emergenza, viene colpita in pieno, e la potenza dell'onda la capovolge.
Il capitano della nave, cerca di
rassicurare i passeggeri, dicendo che è stato inviato l'S.O.S., poco prima dell'impatto...................


Storyline

It is New Year's Eve, and over 2,000 passengers & crew are ringing in the New Year aboard
the huge cruise ship 'Poseidon' when it capsizes on the open sea in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean! A small
group of survivors find themselves unlikely allies in a battle for their lives. Preferring to test the odds alone,
career gambler Dylan Johns ignores captain's orders to wait below for possible rescue and sets out to find his own way
to safety. What begins as a solo mission soon draws others, as Dylan is followed by a desperate father searching for his
daughter and her fiancée--a young couple who hours before couldn't summon the courage to tell him they were engaged
and now face much graver challenges.......
